BULLDOGS ICE HOCKEY

HISTORY:
The Fauquier Bulldogs were created by a few Board Members of the Fauquier County Roller Hockey League. Bryan Lehman, Ryan Roteman, Karl Fischer and Jay Heroux met in February of 2011 at Fosters Grill in Warrenton to discuss the possibility of creating an ice team to play at the Haymarket Iceplex. The idea was to establish a Middle School Ice Hockey team for players who lived in, or went to school in Fauquier County (this was at a time when plans were being made for the Haymarket Iceplex to becoming a permanent rink in Fauquier County). During the planning of the project the core group of FCRHL Board Members connected with Chris Layman who asked to expand the program from Middle School to Middle School and High School. After many hours of planning and preparation the Fauquier Middle School and High School Ice Hockey Program was established. The program kicked off with a summer ice clinic to prepare players for the upcoming season and tryouts. The Bulldogs first game was played on October 28th 2011 at the Prince William Iceplex vs Osborn Park High School. The Bulldogs lost 5-2. The Bulldogs continued to play Northern Virginia Middle School and JV and Varsity High School teams that season and have played ever since.

Although the Bulldogs were established by Board Members of FCRHL the program is managed and administered as a completely separate entity from the roller program. FCRHL has been very generous to allow the Bulldogs to have a tab on their website to keep players and parents informed of team activities.

This Fall (2014) due to the number of players interested in playing High School hockey, the Bulldogs team split off into two teams. Kettle Run High School will play in the Varsity division of NVSHL. Fauquier and Liberty High Schools will form a Junior Varsity Provisional team that will play in the NVSHL.

TEAM PHILOSOPHY:
The Bulldogs philosophy is to build a solid foundation of strong character and good sportsmanship in our youth that they will carry into their schools and communities in Fauquier County. The Bulldogs hold summer skill development clinics that prepare players for tryouts prior to each season. Each season tryouts have become increasingly more challenging as our talent level rises and coaches have the difficult task of having to select the finest talent our county has to offer. It is the Bulldogs goal to assemble the most competitive teams possible to compete with the more experienced local teams. Middle School and High School Hockey is more like Travel Hockey than a House or club program. The Bulldogs work closely with the management at the Haymarket Iceplex to encourage players who do not make the Bulldogs program to play house hockey for the Piedmont Predators to improve their ice hockey skills.

The Middle School Bulldogs have been part of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) since the Fall of 2012 (the inaugural season for Middle School Hockey) NVSHL is a governing body whose purpose is to provide structure, rules and regulation across High School and Middle School hockey in Northern Virginia.

Additional benefits from NVSHL are:

  • Enforcement of county and school boundaries that “zone” specific middle school players to a specific program. For example any middle school aged player who lives or attends school in Fauquier County must play for the Bulldogs and cannot play with another Middle School program.
  • Provides governance over the league and establishes rules and which can include disciplinary action for incidents that may occur during the season.
  • Perform background checks on coaches in the league.
  • Ensure coaches are USA hockey certified.
  • Provide scheduling of league games and referees.
